A Remarkable Economy: Before turning to what Trump said about women, it’s worth focusing on the economy because so many Republicans and Republican curious voters still think that Republicans are better than Democrats when it comes to dealing with economic issues. Historically, that’s not true and it isn’t true now. Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the next president will be inheriting a “remarkable economy,” one that puts its “peers to shame.” Maybe someone should check in with Fox Business News’ Trump mouthpiece Maria Bartiromo to see if she’s still breathing. Remember all those criticisms of BIdenomics, well forget about them because it turns out that Biden was right after all. As the WSJ, reports, “it’s not just that the rate of growth of the US economy is impressive, it’s that the growth we’ve been experiencing doesn’t come solely from using up finite supplies of labor and other resources, which could fuel inflation. Instead, it came from making people and businesses more productive.” Think about that next time you hear Trump, Vance, and oligarch wannabee Elon Musk talk about their plans to impose across the board tariffs, draconian cuts in government services, and implement massive deportations because, as Musk, who wants us to forget that he once violated his visa, admits, those things will be painful to most and will trash the economy for all. It’s hard to imagine why they’d want to destroy the gift that’s awaiting the next president, but it’s more than fair to assume it has something to do with enriching their own pockets with generous tax cuts for them and their friends and the elimination of irritating regulations, particularly those that protect the environment. So, who cares, if the peons suffer, let them eat cake, they can always wash the crumbs down with lead infused water.
Trust Trump? Last weekend Trump’s Madison Square Garden opening act insulted Puerto Rico. To deflect the outrage that the now infamous garbage slur provoked among Puerto Rican voters, he cosplayed as a garbage man, albeit one who had trouble climbing into his truck. Yesterday, he insulted the intelligence of all women, and to be fair a lot of men as well. He did that by saying he would “protect women whether they like it or not.” If that sounds like something a sexual predator would say, it’s because it is. Trump who has been accused of assaulting around 19 women and who was found liable for sexually abusing and defaming E J Carroll, has lived his life getting away with imposing his will on lots of women. After all, he did say on the infamous Access Hollywood tape that stars like him can get away with grabbing women by the pxssy without any punishment. By the way, the Access Hollywood tape is now playing on TIkTok to a whole new audience of voters who were too young to hear it the first time. Trump made his Access Hollywood admission in 2016, the same year he told political pundit Chris Matthews that women who have abortions should be punished. That was well before the Roe overturning Dobbs decision legalized the punishment of women and those who help them obtain abortions. It’s not clear what costume Trump will dress up in to deflect the blowback from his most recent absurd, threatening, and insulting remark, maybe he’ll teeter across a stage in a pair of Melania’s Manolo Blahnik’s made-up with some of JD Vance’s eyeliner to prove that he understands what the women in his life endure but if his most recent threat to the life of former Congresswoman Liz Cheney is indicative, probably not. In case you missed it, yesterday during an interview with former Fox guy/fish sticks heir Tucker Carlson he said “let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK? Let’s see how she feels about it, you know when the guns are trained on her face.” If the FBI isn’t protecting Liz Cheney, they should be, and if they were already protecting her, they should double up, because Trump, you know the guy who says he is all in on protecting women, just put a big target on one of them. Another reminder that when Kamala said that Trump’s plans for day one of his “next” presidency include ticking through his enemies list she wasn’t exaggerating, he’s already begun. He and his acolytes have also started impugning the integrity of the upcoming election, targeting Pennsylvania, the swingiest of the electoral college rich states. And just because they can, Russia and Iran are already helping out, spreading election conspiracy theories on social media, only this time Twitter is X and Musk unlike his predecessor is amplifying the problem. Déjà vu on steroids.
More Endorsements, More Crazy: Yesterday, Mike Bloomberg who recently wrote a $50 million check to the Kamala campaign, posted that he had just “voted for her without hesitation.” Later in the day, basketball great LeBron James endorsed Kamala, posting to his 159 million Instagram followers: “what are we even talking about here?? When I think about my kids and my family and how they will grow up, the choice is clear to me. VOTE KAMALA HARRIS!!!.” Saying that a second Trump term comes with unacceptable risks, The Economist also weighed in, endorsing Kamala. Less well known but maybe carrying some weight among wavering Republicans, former New Hampshire Senator Gordon Humphrey who served two terms in the US Senate, also endorsed Harris saying that he’s “voted Republican for fifty years” but is voting against Trump and pleads “with all Republicans to do the same.” Adding that as a father, a grandfather, a veteran, and a former US Senator, I cannot vote for Trump. He’s dangerous to our democracy.” He was joined by two other prominent New Hampshire Republicans. He’s still in Trump’s camp but Kenneth Chesebro, one of the architects of the fake elector scheme, has had his NY legal license suspended. Moreover, if we’re hoping that Trump will surround himself with some reasonable people if he makes it back to the Oval Office, that’s not likely. Howard Lutnick, the co-chair of Trump’s transition team who is responsible for staffing recommendations, said that he left his hours long talk with RFK Jr persuaded that the nepo-guy’s anti-vax philosophy is spot on, and as a result he too now questions the safety of all vaccines. Make America Have Polio Again may sound like a joke, but sadly the jokes on us.
